Virender Sehwag has equalled his own record for the highest score by an Indian in a Test match. Sehwag bludgeoned an unbeaten 309 to match his previous best made against Pakistan in Multan in 2004.
Sehwag's knock helped India reach 468 for one at stumps, 72 short of the Proteas' first-innings total of 540.
A tired Sehwag lifted his arms in triumph before being embraced by Dravid, acknowledging the standing ovation from his team mates and a 30,000 strong crowd.
Sehwag matched the feat of Australian Don Bradman and West Indies batsman Brian Lara, who have also surpassed 300 twice. Lara holds the record for the highest test score (400 not out).
He still has some way to go to beat the world record of 400 not out posted by Brian Lara against England in Antigua in April 2004.
But, with the Chennai Test now seemingly destined to end in a draw, India captain Anil Kumble is likely to allow Sehwag to give it a crack.
